- Sickle Cell Adventures: Self-management Through Play for Children Aged 4-12 Years
- Summary
- Sickle cell disease is the most unknown and neglected disease worldwide, as recognized by the World Health Organization. Sickle cell disease is a serious, life-threatening blood disorder affecting millions of children worldwide. It causes severe pain, organ damage, and reduces life expectancy by an average of 20 years. Beyond the physical impact, children face the daily challenge of managing their illness—taking medication, staying hydrated, and recognizing early signs of a crisis. However, existing educational resources are often unsuitable for young children, focusing primarily on parents and offering little support before the age of twelve. Without effective self-management, children face frequent hospitalizations, worsening health outcomes, and reduced quality of life. The solution? "Sickle Cell Adventures"—an interactive serious game designed to teach children aged 4 to 12 how to understand and manage their illness through play. The game offers personalized content that adapts to the child’s developmental stage, making learning both accessible and engaging. Through missions and challenges, children learn essential self-management skills like recognizing symptoms, adhering to treatment, and adopting healthy habits. A buddy system connects them with peers, reducing feelings of isolation, while parents and healthcare providers receive tailored education to provide better support. Scientific research confirms that serious games enhance motivation and promote behavior change. With expertise in healthcare, game development, and innovation, the project team—supported by leading institutions such as Games for Health Europe and the Amalia Children's Hospital—aims to empower children and improve health outcomes.
