A Game as a Tool for Learning a Surgical Procedure

Summary

Endoscopic removal of the Vena Saphena Magna (VSM) or the Radial Artery (RA) in Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting ( CABG) is a minimally invasive technique to harvest the VSM from the leg or the RA from the arm for use as a coronary bypass graft. This technique is called Endoscopic Vessel Harvesting (EVH). In the classic method, the saphenous vein is removed through a long incision over the leg or arm, which often leads to wound infections, pain and longer recovery times. With the EVH method this is done through a small incisions using an endoscope and special instruments. However the learning curve is steep. We created a game as a training model instead of a simulator to influence the learning curve. The development of the game and the first experiences are going to be presented.
