- Remote Monitoring in Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease
- Summary
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a heterogeneous lung condition comprising a group of conditions that cause airflow limitation and respiratory symptoms. It is a common but life-threatening disease, currently ranked the fourth leading cause of death worldwide. Patients with COPD often experience events of acute disease worsening, also referred to as acute COPD exacerbations. These exacerbations can be triggered by respiratory infections, environmental pollutants, or unknown factors and are a major cause of emergency room visits and hospitalizations. Early detection of exacerbations is crucial in preventing further deterioration. This is where remote monitoring can play a role. By continuously tracking key vital signs such as oxygen saturation, respiratory rate, and core body temperature, early signs of disease worsening can be identified. Therefore, the Remote Monitoring @ Home project aims to explore the potential of remote monitoring to improve the management and outcomes of COPD patients.
